Gement was founded with the aim of disrupting the construction industry

Our Story & Values

Gement works closely with UK universities and the construction industry to help promote career opportunities in the construction and building materials industries.

Opportunity

In the UK construction industry, women account for only 12.5% of the workforce. In the US, it is just 1.5%. The BAME community is also severely underrepresented; just 5.4% of the sector employees are from BAME backgrounds. Although there are moves in the right direction, progress is painfully slow. At the current rate, it will take 200 years to achieve gender equality.

To help address this imbalance, our educational and events programmes highlight the growing opportunities for women and people from BAME backgrounds in the exciting and rewarding world of construction.

We are more certain than ever that change is needed, especially in the construction and building materials industry. At Gement, we work to connect people together, nurture raw talent, and bring wider public awareness to the construction industry. We have a nationwide impact with partners up and down the UK and Ireland.

Traditionally, the construction industry is a major producer of greenhouse gasses, and in its present form, is not sustainable in the long term. We recognise that the industry must change to a far more sustainable model. We work towards this change by promoting more sustainable technologies and increasing awareness through our educational programmes and special events.

Our original vision was inspired by opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint of construction by replacing conventional cement with geopolymer cements. Geopolymer cements offer an 80% reduction in greenhouse gasses and a potentially superior, more robust product.

We are now manufacturing geopolymer cement as part of an Innovate UK funded project, LOCOWAG.

Our special events programme focuses on sustainable alternatives to current industry practices. These include sustainable buildings, geopolymer cements and other alkali-activated cementitious materials (AACM).

Sustainability

Sustainability is the cornerstone of Gement. It underpins everything we do. The construction industry produces 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions, so each step we take to reduce this moves in the right direction.

From our geopolymer cement system to how we work, including our practice of using recycled materials or those from traceable responsible sources, underpin our commitment to a more sustainable future.

Community

It is also by working as a community that the construction industry can hope to reduce its carbon footprint in time to avoid catastrophic climate change. Our strategy’s core is to bring together stakeholders from multiple construction industry sectors and higher education and research facilities  to explore ways to overcome this challenge by using more sustainable low-carbon materials and low-emissions methods and efficient construction machinery.

Things work better when people and organisations work together. At Gement, we work united as a community; respect, trust, honesty and integrity are the foundations of our work ethics.
