Construction currently faces huge skill shortages in all areas with Construction Skills Network estimating at least 250,000 additional construction workers will be needed by 2026 to meet growing demand in the industry. In a study conducted between 2018 and 2020 by the CITB and BeOnsite (established by Lendlease), it was found 71% of new people leave construction after 3 months – 50% are dismissed and 21% resign.

The causes for dismissal were predominately related to soft skills such as timekeeping, attendance, attitude and lack of performance, whilst reasons people resigned were due to lack of support from the employer and not feeling valued. Gement is currently working with the CITB to help provide better support for individuals starting or returning to employment in construction to help increase retention rates and encourage upskilling.
